Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the origins of pole?

There has always been a heated discussion about whether pole has originated from India's "Mallakhamba" or perhaps China's "Chinese pole" - both mainly performed by men.

Although there are similarities, such as the apparatus used and certain moves that are performed, pole dancing has been pioneered by women dating all the way back to 1920's and traveling circuses, where they would perform suggestive movements around circus tent poles, as they were not yet allowed to be part of the show. Soon this act transformed into burlesque and later on moved into strip clubs, which is where majority of pole dance, as we know it today, takes its inspiration from.

This article gives a great in-depth insight if  you would like to learn more about the origins of pole, the importance POC have played throughout its history and why it should be non negotiable to support and protect sex workers and their working rights.

2. Who is pole dancing for?

Pole is for anyone that is open to learning a new and exciting way of moving.

It's nothing like you've done before and it will completely sweep you off your feet!

Honestly though, no matter where you are in life - you can start today. We all have our limitations and it would be naive to ignore them, but to start learning pole, you just need the will to learn - and be okay to fail. Because without failing, there is no progress.

3. Do I have to be fit?

You do not need to be fit to start pole dancing. I think it's important to be honest here and make it clear that just to learn the basics is very different from wanting to progress and train more to become an advanced pole dancer.

You will absolutely need to be strong, mobile, flexible and in control of your body in those later stages of your learning. Otherwise you are playing Russian roulette with your health.

Luckily, most studios, including ours, operates on progressive overload learning and structure that supports you as the demands of pole on your body increase - helping you to develop the skills needed for all those badass tricks you want to do!

4. I’m a beginner. Which class should I start with?

If you’re new to pole, we recommend starting with our Intro to Pole taster class, followed by our 6 week Pole Foundations beginner course. These classes are a perfect introduction to pole dancing,  helping to build confidence, improve mobility, and introduce key pole dance principles in a supportive environment.

5.. What should I bring?

For your very first lesson, feel free to wear whatever you feel comfortable in.

Leggings/t-shirt or shorts and sports bra are all perfectly fine.

We won't need any exposed skin just yet, so if you prefer to be more covered at this point, it won't be a problem.

Later on, tricks will require skin grip which you will be notified about in time.

Some people, me included, love to dress up a little bit and wear something that makes them feel confident and good in their skin - whatever that looks like for you, embrace it!

Make sure to bring water and obtain from wearing any moisturiser or hand jewellery.

6. How does your membership program work?

Once you have completed the Pole Foundations course, you can continue on taking classes by signing up to a one of our memberships - each with its own perks, indicating the amount of classes you are able to attend per week.

Just like most gym memberships, you will be charged automatically every week with the option to pause or cancel anytime after you've informed your instructor.

For more information please see our Terms & Conditions.

7. Can I just attend casually?

Yes, you can attend most classes as drop-ins.

Unless having minimum 6 months of experience, we cannot allow new comers to casually attend Pole tricks due to its progressive nature and higher risk of injury.

8. I can't make class, what happens next?

We require minimum of 48h notice for "Drop in" style classes to be able to offer a transfer for your ticket. If you fail to inform us within this timeframe, no refund or transfer policy applies (doesn't apply to membership drop ins or block courses).

If you have prepaid for a course or are currently on a membership and cannot come to class, you will not be offered transfer or refund, but you might be entitled to a make up class. More information can be found  in our Terms & Conditions document.

9. Are there any risks?

Like with any activity, there will always be some risk of injury that cannot be 100% avoided. Pole dancing is an extreme sport that requires a high level of body awareness, strength, mobility and flexibility. When in class, always pay attention to instructions and do not attempt things outside of your abilities.
